Chichester City
Chichester is the County town of West Sussex and one of the UK's finest smaller Cathedral Cities.
Built by the Romans after their invasion in AD43, Chichester proudly blends two thousand years of heritage with a lively and contemporary lifestyle.
Chichester's Roman name is 'Noviomagus Reginorum' meaning 'New Market of the Proud People' and the city's compact streets still follow the original Roman plan. The Roman walls around the city are in fact medieval, but built upon the Roman foundations.
Chichester Cathedral's spire towers over the Sussex Plain and can be seen for miles around. The cathedral is Norman, with Gothic additions it was dedicated in 1108 and is the site of the shrine of St Richard. Second only to this great landmark is the Tudor Market cross which stands at the centre of the city's four main Georgian shopping streets.
For those who enjoy the arts, Chichester is home to the internationally renowned Chichester Festival Theatre as well as the award winning Pallant House Gallery which houses one of the country's best collections of 20th Century British art in a unique combination of a Queen Anne town house and a contemporary extension.
