The city is also home to Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum, Southsea Castle and, for a bird's-eye view of the whole Solent region take a trip to the top of the Spinnaker Tower next to Gunwharf Quay's outlet shopping centre.
East Hampshire is a tranquil area of countryside and small towns with Queen Elizabeth Country Park's acres of forest to explore and Gilbert White's Selborne home which is open to visitors.
Winchester, the county town, has an ancient cathedral and beautiful buildings reflecting its historic heritage alongside the delightful River Itchen which flows on to Southampton.
Paulton's Park, near Romsey, is a magnet for families who enjoy the thrills of rides to suit all ages while nearby Broadlands, family home of the Mountbattens, is also open to the public.
East Sussex
One of the most popular destinations along the south coast is Brighton with its lively shops, night life and visitor attractions including the Regency Pavilion and Sea Life Centre and pier on the popular seafront.
Lewes has a special atmosphere with its small shops, perched on top of a hill above the River Ouse and for history buffs there's the castle to explore, Anne of Cleeves' house and the ruins of a priory.
For children, Drusillas Park at Alfriston has plenty to amuse and entertain with animals to pet and rides to enjoy.
