Come to wonderful West Dean this winter to exercise your vocal chords, give yourself a well deserved treat and be taught by leading musicians, many of whom are world renowned in their field. There are courses for all levels of singer, from complete beginner to advanced - you can come for a day or indulge yourself over an entire weekend.




With its large country house style, West Dean College, which is located in the middle of the 6,400 acre West Dean Estate, within the south Downs National Park, West Sussex, offers a creative educational environment enabling you to escape the pressures of daily life and immerse yourself in a favourite hobby or learn a new skill.




Masterclasses for singers



November 25–27 WE2399 £191 Intermediate/Advanced.


Improve your vocal technique and performance as you work on six songs of your choice (in any style, genre or language) in informal masterclasses and workshops, and end the course with a short recital. Tutors: Jacquelyn Fugelle with Marcus Martin. Jacquelyn Fugelle is one of the most versatile sopranos of her generation, performing in opera, operetta, oratorio and recital. She also teaches singing, adjudicates, and gives workshops and masterclassses in the UK and abroad.




Songs to the lute and guitar



March 16–18 WE2577 £191 Intermediate/Advanced.


This is a practical course for confident solo singers and players of the lute or guitar. Appropriate music of any period or style is welcome, and interpretation and performing confidence is explored in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere. Tutor: Michael Fields is a highly regarded accompanist and soloist on lute and guitar. He has worked with singers as diverse as Emma Kirkby and Van Morrison and teaches on short courses worldwide.




A joyous tradition – singing folk songs in harmony



April 21 1D2738 £95 Beginners.


Learn the skills of singing unaccompanied in several voice parts and develop your musical abilities. Tutor: Sarah Morgan co-leads Winchester Community Choir, as well as running workshops for a variety of organisations. She has published two books of songs arranged for community choirs.

Melody, harmony and rhythm – how music works



October 14–16 WE2277 £195 Suitable for all Harmony, melody and rhythm are the fundamental elements of music but how do they work and what are the rules that govern their use? This weekend explores the construction of music with a recital on Saturday evening. Tutor: Roy Stratford studied at Reading University and the Royal College of Music. He is Head of Piano and Chamber Music at St Paul’s School, London, and a conductor and lecturer.



Vocal workshop – how to use your singing voice



October 22 1D2299 £93 Beginners/Intermediate Learn about breathing, posture and ways of projecting your voice through exercises and songs as you sing popular harmonies together as a group. Tutor: Christian Nunnikhoven studied guitar and singing at Toonkunst Muziekschool ‘de Munt’, Dordrecht, the Netherlands. He teaches both subjects to adults and children and is a regular performer both solo and with his band.
