Nutbourne is a family run boutique wine producer making award winning still and sparkling wines in
the heart of West Sussex. The wines are mostly made from grapes grown on the estate and every
part of the winemaking process takes place on site in the state of the art winery. The atmospheric
old windmill has the tasting room and shop where visitors can buy from a range of wines.
The Vines
First established in 1980, the vineyard has been developed further since 1990 by the Gladwin family,
who make a point of working to preserve the landscape and wildlife around them as well as
nurturing their grapes.
The “Terroir” at Nutbourne is an ideal wine growing environment. A warm microclimate protected
by the South Downs, with gentle south-facing slopes and fertile soil. First planted in 1980, and
developed by the Gladwin family since 1990, the 26 acre estate produces award winning still and
sparkling wines.
Getting Ready for Harvest
If you really want to get to the heart of the English wine revival, offers of help with the harvesting of
grapes is welcome.
Throughout the year, the vines are tended by hand, and this includes harvest, when the grapes are
picked by hand. It usually takes place in October but the dates vary according to the ripening season.
VINEYARD TOURS
Tours are usually available from May to October during opening hours, which are Tuesdays to
Fridays from 2-5pm and on Saturdays 11am-5pm but they need to be booked in advance.
It is also possible to follow a self-guided trail around the vineyard, where dogs and children are
welcome.
