Mobilisation and Mourning: Chichester during the Great War

In this talk, we explore how Chichester prepared itself for fighting the First World War and how it remembered the losses it suffered during the long years of the conflict.

We’ll look at maps, documents, newspapers and photographs to piece together the history of Chichester during the war. From the charitable work of individuals and the actions of the mayor and city council who set in place the structures that sustained the city during the war, to the decisions made to commemorate and mourn the dead, we’ll be able to understand how Chichester was radically transformed during the First World War.
