Rural Life Weekend: English Scything

Saturday 4th August to Sunday 5th August 2018
10.30am – 5.30pm

Join us to find out more about traditional scything and haymaking during this informal weekend of demonstrations and displays.

Over this weekend we plan to include demonstrations on:

  • Scything and hay making
  • Scythe set up and maintenance
  • Grinding scythe blades
  • Snath makign from both natural formed timber and through steam bending
  • How to make ironwork to suit the snaths
  • Hay rake making
  • A display of historic photographs and scythes from the Museum’s collection

  • An introduction to the scythe
  • The English scythe
  • The role of the blacksmith: scythe blades
  • The snath and how it is shaped
  • Making a wooden pitchfork
  • How to look after a scythe
  • Hay and hay making
  • Using the harvest for chair seating
