Chichester Canal

Our scheduled and special boat trips get you closer to the water and to nature. Close to the city centre, we offer boat trips, our popular waterside Cafe, paddleboard and canoe licences, fishing and walking along the towpath.

Our scheduled boat trips operate on ‘Kingfisher’ from the Canal Basin providing 75 minute return trips. A friendly volunteer crew are on board and will be happy to answer questions about the canal history, points of interest and the local wildlife along the route. Enjoy the reflections on the water and the unique views of the Cathedral and the beautiful Sussex South Downs. As you glide past the wild flowers and reed beds, watch out for herons and kingfishers in their natural habitat. Scheduled trips are available up to 4 times daily, February to October.
Special cruises onboard ‘Richmond’ from late February to November include our very popular Fish and Chip and Ploughman’s Lunch cruises, plus new for 2019 we’re offering Pie and Mash and Afternoon Tea cruises. For example, on our Pie and Mash cruises, you’re offered a choice of three pies, mash, mushy peas and gravy from Chichester’s own award-winning Turner’s Pies, a vanilla ice cream from Caroline’s Dairy in Birdham, tea or coffee and one glass of wine, real ale or fruit juice.
Richmond offers our ever-popular Easter Bunny trips, fun for all the family. Private hire is available for special family celebrations or corporate events.
Both boats offer a lift and Kingfisher has an accessible WC.
At our Canal Basin, our waterside Cafe offers customers a warm welcome. There’s a wide choice of drinks, mouth-watering cakes and light refreshments. There is a lift to the first floor seating area, an accessible toilet and baby changing facilities.
At the Cafe, you can hire a rowing boat, and obtain licences for paddleboards, canoes and fishing.
Following our towpath, enjoy a level 4 mile walk along the Canal from the Basin to Chichester Harbour. One of the most beautiful views on the Canal is from Hunston Bridge towards Chichester, painted by JMW Turner in 1828.
